The air in your tires is constantly fluctuating, especially when tires drop or increase dramatically. That is why it is crucial for you to check your tire pressure so that you can maintain the proper air pressure. Properly inflated tires are vital in improving tire life, vehicle handling, fuel efficiency, and safety. So you’re scratching your head trying to remember when you last checked, you might as well do it ASAP.
You should try your best to check your tires every few months and as much as every month. It is quicker and easier than you think, especially if you buy a gauge to have on hand. You can find them at gas stations, Amazon, or car shops. They will last you forever.
Before you can get started, it is imperative that you find your manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure measurements for your vehicle’s specific make/model. You can find it on the driver’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual. They tend to be around 30-35 psi.
Once you have located the numbers, you know what is considered under- or over-inflated when measuring. You should follow these steps:
- Step 1: Remove the valve stem cap on the tire, and put them somewhere safe, like a pocket.
- Step 2: Press the tool firmly on the stem to the point where you hear a hissing noise. Once you get a consistent reading, you should compare it to the numbers recommended by the automaker.
- Step 3: If it is in the ideal range, simply screw the cap back on and repeat on your other tires.
If your tires are overinflated and need adjusting, you will need an air hose or air compressor. You can find these at your local gas station, and they are usually free to use. If you aren’t sure how to use the tool, feel free to bring your vehicle to Scruggs Automotive. We can fill up your tires for you and inspect them to ensure they are in good shape.
